The machine I ordered had a different display on the screen for density so I would make sure your getting what you want before ordering.

    Powermatic III+

Posted by Gus on Sep 1st 2021

I have made 700 cigarettes so far with the Powermatic III and so far it performs as advertised/expected. It is well-built, very compact machine, solidly constructed.

But since I also own a Fresh Choice Electric Cigarette Machine (the predecessor to the Revolution Electric Cigarette Machine) I am also in a position to compare the two machines. I have had my Fresh Choice machine for almost 20 years (yes, that is correct – 20 years) and have only had to return it once for repair so far. I estimate that the machine has made well over 250,000 cigarettes over this 20 year period.

The Powermatic III is smaller and not as bulky as the Fresh Choice / Revolution machine. The casings on both machines are thick plastic. For some reason both machines have a smoked plastic cover/window for the tobacco chamber that makes it a tad hard to see how much tobacco is in the chamber. Clear plastic would be better, in my opinion.

The Powermatic has 3 digital settings for “compaction” whereas the Fresh Choice/Revolution has a knob that you turn for the desired compaction. The 3 settings on the Powermatic are King, King+, and 100mm, whereas the Fresh Choice/Revolution knob gives you 11 compaction settings. The differences from one to the next, however, are barely noticeable. It is only on the lowest, middle, and highest settings that a difference is clearly discernable.

The Powermatic also has a digital virtual counter that keeps track of the overall number of cigarettes you make (it has six places so I guess it can go up to 999,999), and also has a counter that you can reset with a button on the back of the machine to keep track of how many cigarettes you make each time you use the machine. The Fresh Choice/Revolution machine has no counter.

One concern with the Powermatic is cleaning. Cleaning the tobacco chamber is easy enough but because of the action of the tobacco compactor/compressor there is sure to be residual tobacco dust collecting somewhere inside in the machine. There are 12 screws on underneath side of the machine so it would appear that it might be possible to open the machine if need be, but I won’t be doing this until the machine’s warranty is up.

With the Fresh Choice/Revolution machine, the back can be removed by removing 10 screws and the insides of the machine can be pretty well cleaned off using a can of dust off.

As mentioned I’ve had to return my Fresh Choice/Revolution machine once for repair. I have also purchased 4 of the plastic nipples onto which the cigarette tube is inserted to have tobacco injected into it. I have also had to purchase a new plunger (the thing that holds the cigarette on the nipple as it gets filled). Mark, at Hardworking Product sells these even though they are not shown on the website. (Why is that Mark?)

If the Powermatic machine breaks or begins functioning incorrectly there does not seem to be a repair service, beyond the one year warranty period.

So why did a buy a Powermatic III if I have Fresh Choice/Revolution machine? Having used an electric machine for so long I am now spoiled. I did not want to go back to my old hand-crank machine if I have to send my Fresh Choice machine to Mark for repair again. (I almost went with the Powermatic II+ or the Powermatic IV but decide to splurge.)

Over the last six months my Fresh Choice machine has been “short filling” probably 12 to 14 out of every 20 tubes by anywhere from 1/4 to almost 3/4 of an inch. (I tamp down each cigarette after I make them to more evenly pack the tobacco and these measurements are taken after tamping down the tobacco.) I have dutifully cleaned the sensors, and I’ve also adjusted the compaction settings (following the instructions in the videos) a number of times in an attempt to compensate for this without any luck. So I’m not sure what the problem is. I am guessing I may have to send it in for repair in the near future.

Note, however, that so far I have noticed that the Powermatic III also sometimes “short fills” tubes by up to 3/8 of an inch, even on the King+ setting. This happens usually for the first 5 or 6 tubes so I am guessing it is either because of the tobacco I use or because the tobacco is still settling in the chamber, or a combination of both. However, I found this to be easily correctable by changing the setting to 100mm. At the 100mm setting I do not even have to tamp down the tobacco in each tube. So I would encourage Powermatic owners to experiment with the three settings to see which one they prefer.

Based on the cost differential of the two machines, I would expect the Powermatic machine to function correctly for 5-7 years and to be able to make at least 125,000 cigarettes with it. I will be disappointed with the machine if these expectations are not met.

    Powerpatic 3+

This machine is a beast. This is my second one. First one lasted 30,000 until my wife tried to roll the bottom of the bag. Pure dust. Hopelessly Jammed. I'm confidant that it would have given at least 20,000 more. Decided to by a brand new one. Wow. Strong as ever and way more quiet.

If there was one improvement I could recommend, Put a little LED light just above the point where you load the tube. I RYO at night before bed and have to put on all the lights to see where the tube is inserted. Would be "next level" if i could operator in the dark. Great Product and will be a long time client.
